MIFARE Plus® cards provide maximum security

MIFARE® no longer recommends using MIFARE Classic® security relevant applications

MIFARE® cards are nowadays one of the most used devices for electronic purse, access control, employee identification, transportation cards or ticketing. But what are they exactly? Are they all the same?

MIFARE cards are memory cards with RFID technology

MIFARE® cards are memory cards with RFID technology, which makes them both readable and writable, and known as “smart cards”. They include a chip not visible inside and an antenna that allows the card to communicate with the receiver / RF reader at a distance of between 2.5cm and 10cm They also have a memory capacity that varies depending on the model, 1Kbit. or 4Kbit. to record the user’s information, serial numbers, passwords, etc.

How do they work?

The technology used allows mutual authentication between the card and the reader. This authentication is done by sending a message from the card to the reader. Then the reader sends a message back to the card. This process is repeated three times, to verify that the card is valid for that reader.

Data transmission between both devices is encrypted (a random number according to a certain key is generated, establishing an encrypted channel), so that it is set a protection against any attempt to access the data fraudulently.

Although the data stored in the card are not encrypted, they are protected by a 48-bit key, which means that only the reader with the correct password can access the data, so the security level is the highest.

The advantages of a contactless system

The advantages of the contactless system are speed and ease of use, lack of wear off suffered by these cards and limited maintenance.

How many kinds of MIFARE® card exist? What is the difference between them?

MIFARE Classic®. It is the first model that appeared, but the brand is no longer recommended for use in relevant security applications, as indicated on its website.

MIFARE Ultralight®. Used in applications low cost and high volume of people, but with little memory (only 512 bits).

MIFARE DESFire®. MIFARE DESFire®. It is especially used for multi-application solutions.

MIFARE Plus®. It is the benchmark in security for applications in contactless smart cards. It uses a double AES128 encryption algorithm, so they are designed to offer the highest level of security for critical applications, while avoiding copying or forgery.

In By we work with MIFARE Plus® cards in its version of 4Kbit. to ensure maximum security access control and protect personal and biometric data of the user.
